According to Pinterest, Holidays came “earlier than ever” this year, April! That’s right, as early as April 2020 people were searching holiday decorations, recipes and gift ideas. Maybe you were spending your time at home searching online for the next great gift or tablescape for your small gathering. However you look at it, the holidays are very different this year. Let’s have a little fun and talk about trends.
Nostalgic Holiday Decor
A trend that started in the early 1970’s has gained popularity in recent years, Ceramic light up Christmas trees. When you start seeing them at Target, you know they have resurfaced. Did your Parents or Grandparents have one of these? Pull it out of the attic, basement or closet and display it this year. Reminiscing may provide happiness and reminders of positive times while also comforting you and your family this year.
Shimmering Metallics and Metal
How about platinum which appears more like champagne on a Christmas tree?? This elegant metallic has a heartwarming simplicity to it. Hobby Lobby shelves were overflowing with platinum ornaments, iced spheres and ribbon this season.

Repurposing existing pieces and freshening up hand me down materials makes sense this year especially if you want to limit exposure in stores and stay on a budget. Was your grandma a quilter with a ton of leftover fabric? Mine was, she had this fantastic Christmas fabric that was used to create a garland. Any fabric will work depending on your color scheme. One piece of rope, some time and patience and you have budget friendly holiday garland with fond memories.
Have you ever wondered what to do with those red and white tea towels? Frame them in different sizes and hang them on the wall for a pop of color. Wrap pictures with wrapping paper and ribbon to create instant holiday cheer. Do you have any spare fabric around? Wrapped presents and pillows in Christmas fabric have multiple purposes.
Live Greenery
What about old wooden wine boxes or soda boxes you have in your basement. Fill them with greenery and a lantern for a beautiful vignette on your table. These could also be charming on a front porch. A wellness trend has started and doesn’t stop during the Holidays despite all of the desserts and cookies. Plants are believed to be good for your health and help clean indoor air. Oh and by the way, this trend will continue into wedding season. Greenery is less expensive than flowers and adds a simple soft color for the special day.

Popular choices include buffalo check ribbon or burlap as a part of the farmhouse trend, Navy (which is the topic for a future blog), Neutral color palettes including blush pink and Touches of frost and Ice. While you may also join the crowd making homemade Pinecone garland, Wooden stars, Paper ornaments, or Cranberry garland. What’s really trending is what works best for your family this holiday season.
